The Re-Kittenizing of Scarlett

Thanks for sharing your tales of kitty interactions in the comments yesterday. I'm still adjusting to having two non-littermate cats, and it's very reassuring to know that my girls are acting normally. And by the way, Scarlett and Melly snuggled on the couch last night, and this morning, Scarlett pinned Melly down and gave her head a very thorough bathing. So it's definitely not all bad!

And on to today's post:

Melly climbs on everything, attacks everything that moves (and many things that don't), squeezes into every teeny space... and Scarlett has been watching. After Melly jumped up on the bathroom shelf, Scarlett followed and it’s now one of her favorite places. After Melly played with the mousie toy and the jingle ball that Scarlett had had for years, Scarlett suddenly started playing with them. After Melly decided that sitting in front of the TV while we were watching it was a brilliant idea, Scarlett started sitting on the TV stand.

When Scarlett became a fully indoor cat about four years ago, she (understandably) became extremely bored. I gave her lots of extra attention and a whole bunch of toys, and played with her as much as she'd let me, but even though she eventually got used to indoor life, Scarlett's old spunk and energy never completely returned.

Until now, that is. Even though Scarlett and Melly continue to have loud disagreements and violent tussles, I think Melly has provided Scarlett with exactly the excitement she needed and has reminded her how to have fun. I had almost forgotten how silly Scarlett used to be; it's wonderful to have her back.

YAY, we're happy to hear Scarlett is coming out of her shell again!!! Our mama has always felt that there should be at least two kitties so they can keep each other company and interact. We are purring that Scarlett and Melly will bond and become the best of friends.

Friendly competition...I LOVE to watch the interactions of my crowd, too. When Sylvester came home on Saturday he was pretty restless and couldn't settle in to sleep until Sunady afternoon and the Horde was dead on their feet from lack of sleep!
Mutual bathing is a very good sign, indeed.

It takes awhile -- in our cases it is still going on. I can see that our kitties will never become best friends, but they do play and pounce on one another....except Abby. No one need mess with her!

Hooray! I always had only one cat at a time until 9 and Chani. I never fully bought into the whole keep each other company thing because my previous two cats were just fine. However, after having 9 and Chani as a pair, even with their disagreements, it's such a joy to have the two and they do have those cute cuddly moments that help me get through Chani's hissing at 9 when he is too rough.

Melly will keep Scarlett young at heart :-)

I think that is probably very true that Scarlett is getting her spunk back thanks to Melly being there. When Virgil moved in that happened a bit at our house, though mostly the older cats were quite a bit older by then. But even when Lola moved in so long ago, we noticed the older cats playing more. I think it is partly that they remember what it was like to be younger, and partly them trying to prove that it is their stuff (like with toys - you think they are done, you give it to the kitten, and all of a sudden it is like "hey, wait, I wasn't really tired of that - give it back").

We are so glad ta hear that Melly is helpin Scarlett become more active again! Sadly, it seems that Ayla decided ta become the "adult" in the house since LC left us, and she doesnt play as much now. So I play "for 2" now...

We're glad that Melly is kittenizing Scarlett again! That's what kitty sisfurs are for! And in our case, a woofie sisfur helps too!

Isn't it cool how they get ideas from each other? It sounds like Scarlett's life is much more interesting since Melly came into it.
