I got back Monday afternoon from visiting family in Iowa for Thanksgiving. I realized on Monday, somewhere over Colorado, that I'd forgotten to schedule a blog post, so I'm sorry about that. Anyway, my humble contribution to the Thanksgiving cause was pie: apple-cranberry, apple-ginger, and pumpkin.* For the top crusts of the apple pies, I decided to try something I saw at the state fair earlier this year: one of the prize-winning pies had a festive-looking top crust made of overlapping star-shaped cut-outs. Here is my version:
It couldn't have been easier to do. I just rolled out the dough, cut out the hearts, and brushed each one with milk before placing it on the pie. If you are like me and have trouble rolling out a circular top crust, or if your dough tends to be a bit crumbly, this technique is the way to go!
*The pumpkin filling came out of a can due to time constraints, but I was recently given a delicious-looking recipe for pumpkin pie that I will be testing soon. I'll be sure to report back.
"Oh, I'm sorry, were you trying to put the slipcover on the couch?"
"Well, tough bananas, lady."
As you may have noticed, I haven't been commenting very much lately (although I have still been visiting!). I recently started a new position at work that has resulted in a lot of extra time spent at the office, and--after a month of evening classes and lots of practicing--I finally got my driver's license! Now, on top of the usual holiday craziness, there is car shopping to do, which means that my commenting probably won't be getting more frequent any time soon. So, because of this continued busyness, I'm switching to a M-W-F posting schedule until the new year. I hope you'll all bear with us until things calm down.
Edited to add: I just heard that dear Huffle Mawson has passed away. Please extend your prayers for her people, Tracey and Kendall. We're sending lots of hugs, purrs, and thoughts their way.
The kitties of Mark's Mews gave us an award! It's the Nip Award, and we are supposed to mention something we want to celebrate. For ideas, I checked to see what Scarlett and Melly were up to and found this:
Therefore, we are celebrating togetherness. Because even two kitties who are definitely Not Friends can appreciate spending time with each other.
I can never pick just a few people(/cats) to pass these awards on to, so please feel free to claim this award for yourself!
A couple of years ago, Cat sent us a Paw it Forward package that contained a kitty Halloween decoration. Melly took a shine to it immediately, and when I got it out again this year, Melly decided it was time to play.
As you can see, Melly did a number on the kitty, but it's nothing a little glue can't fix. It'll be good as new in no time.
