Adorable Adoptable Kitten

I went to the pet store recently to pick up some presents for Luna and for my friend's puppy. (Don't worry, Scarlett and Melly were not forgotten either. They got duck jerky, which is a new favorite.) While I was there, I poked my head into the cat room to give the kitties some scritches. Most of the cats were napping and not feeling very interactive, but this little one was so excited to get attention:

So cute!  I noticed that each of the cat cages had a fleece bed inside, all of which looked very cozy, and then I noticed the bed in this empty cage:

It's one of mine! I was so excited to see it being used. Well, almost being used. I'm sure there will be a cat in there before long.

Do you ever visit the kitties who are up for adoption?  I love going in and giving them some love, but it just breaks my heart to walk away from them.  I currently live in an apartment so I'm limited to the number of cats I can have (both by my lease and by the size of the place), but man, I am in so much trouble if I ever get a house. I will want to adopt every single cat I come across!

Scarlett and the Bed Project

I finally pulled my recent photos off my cell phone, and I came across these ones of Scarlett from when I was working on the first batch of pet beds. She wasn't quite as enthusiastic as Melly was, but she was very intrigued by the whole sewing process.

"I think there's a pea under here."

"This is so interesting! What a wondrous machine."

Oh, Melly

I set a folded bathmat on top of the dehumidifier and turned my back for a second; when I turned back around, I found this:

"Hello."

Scarlett's New Collar

Scarlett doesn't mug for the camera like Melly does, but she struck a few poses to show off her new collar. She's very proud.

"Look, it's shiny and silver! And there are rhinestones!"

"And here it is from the other side."

"Ok, done now. Pet me?"

Divalicious, and new collars

When I first got Scarlett, my sister sent her a sparkly collar and a tag that said "Diva."  Here's a picture of the collar:

Pretty fabulous, eh?  Well, the collar eventually became a casualty of Scarlett's forays into the great outdoors, and after a while, the tag didn't seem to suit her anymore so I put it away.

I recently got new collars for the kitties--pink with rhinestones for Melly and silver with rhinestones for Scarlett--and decided that the diva tag should make another appearance.

Let's be honest. It's perfect on her.

Scarlett Keeps an Ear Out

"I am Scarlett, ferocious hunter of... well... nothing.
Let's try that again.
I am Scarlett, intent watcher and listener of the neighborhood!"

"Melly! Stop destroying all the things!"

"I must keep one ear on the neighborhood and the other on Melly.
My work is never done."

Work, work, and more work

Recently, things have been a little crazy at the office. We're on the home stretch with the project, finally, but it has involved a lot of long days (or nights, as the case may be). I've been doing a lot of the work at home, where it's easier to focus and I can relax a little.

And when I say that it's easier to focus, I mean except for these distractions:

"No. You're done. No more work for you."

"Please pay attention to me."

The Kitties and my Mom

My mom was in town for a visit last week, and as I mentioned, she is very allergic to cats to the point that she can't even touch them. Melly was utterly befuddled to meet a human immune to her constant demands for attention, and kept approaching my poor sneezy mother looking for affection. Scarlett, on the other hand, was overjoyed at having her personal space so well respected. Scarlett is normally not a fan of strangers, but she and my mom got along famously by the end of the week. Scarlett would approach my mom and nuzzle her toes; Mom would scratch Scarlett's chin with her foot. I have no pictures of this, so you'll have to take my word for the fact that it was utterly adorable.

My mom also couldn't resist taking pictures of the cats, especially Melly, who gamely posed and mugged for the camera.

All in all, it was a fun visit, and I think the cats enjoyed having my mom around. (This may be at least partially because she shared tiny bites of salmon and chicken with them.) I will say, though, that they are very happy to again have access to the bedroom! Scarlett has barely left her precious blue blanket since I brought my mom to the airport.

Mellybean

Doesn't it look like she's plotting destruction? I really wonder what goes on in that fuzzy little head of hers.

Thoughtful Kitties

"I'm thinking about destruction. That still counts right?"

Someone should probably check for airborne pigs

They're touching! Voluntarily! With no hissing, growling, or swatting!

In which Scarlett is confused

My mom is visiting this week, and because she's allergic to cats, the bedroom has become a cat-free zone. I moved Scarlett's beloved blue blanket off the dresser before closing up the room and setting the HEPA filters to high. Scarlett sneaked back in and made her way to the dresser, and was bewildered to find her blue blanked missing.

"But...but...where did it go?"

The sewing project continues

As of last night, I have finished 22 kitty beds! I'm normally not quite so efficient, but work has been nuts and it turns out that sewing is a good stress reliever. I also wanted to get as many done as possible before next week, because my mom will be in town and I won't have much time to sew.

The cats continue to enjoy assisting with this project, and by assisting, I mostly mean getting in the way. Unfortunately for them--well, Melly, mostly--I've had to employ the squirt bottle quite liberally to get them off the fabric while I'm working on it. Melly also enjoys napping on the piles of beds, which is adorable and calls to mind the princess and the pea.

"Ahhhhhh."

"Oh, hi. Am I on the fleece you were trying to pin together?
Gosh, how unfortunate for you."

"What is this stuff? It is so much fun to play with!"

"I'm ignoring the fact that these are still held together with pins. I decided to test them out anyway.
Verdict: they're comfy."

Happy Independence Day!

And happy Thursday to everyone not in the good ol' US of A!

I don't have any cat pictures for today, but I do have a YouTube video to share. It's one of my favs.

My dad's family came to the US when he was a kid, and my mom's forbears came over in the 1800s, and I get a little misty-eyed thinking about those young families making the brave choice to leave everything they knew behind and start over here. And it's all because of a few rebellious and tenacious people a couple hundred years ago who set in motion the development of this country, one that became the Better Place to which so many immigrants have come.

Lest you think I'm being blindly patriotic, I assure you that I'm very aware of the past and present problems of the US, but on this day I like to put those aside and focus on the positive. The ideals of this country are worth celebrating, even if the reality isn't always.

Have a wonderful time with your families today, everyone, and stay safe.

Melly Helps with a Sewing Project

As you know, I am working on a fairly substantial sewing project. My living room looks like a fleece factory exploded, but I'm having fun.  And so is Melly, who has taken it upon herself to assist with quality control.

"This fleece here is very fuzzy. I approve."

"This fleece here is a good spot to clean between my toes.
It's nice to have a fuzzy spot to clean between one's toes."

"This fleece is also a good spot to hang out.
You're welcome for testing it so thoroughly."

Guest Kitty: Luna

This lovely gray girl is Luna, my sister's cat. Isn't she a cutie? She could give Melly a run for her money in the belly floof department.

Woe are We

We're having a bit of a heat wave in the Pacific NW. I know temps in the high 80s aren't much to get excited about in a lot of places, but it's very unusual out here.

"It's hot and I'm covered in fur. Of course I'm grumpy."

"It's too bad you didn't get a picture of me cooling my belly floof in front of the fan. I was extremely cute."
