Friday Flashback: Belly Floof

This is the first picture on the blog that was tagged belly floof.  Funny, since there's not a lot of floof there! Melly's hair was much shorter as a kitten, and here it was still growing back from her spay surgery.  Still pretty darn cute, though.

Thursday in the Garden

I recently took some pictures of the flowers in Geoff's mom's gardens and thought I'd share them here.

Melting Melly

Doesn't it look like she's just sinking into the couch?  Melly does not have a problem relaxing, that's for sure. Funnily enough, she startles extremely easily, so it's zero-to-GAHH! in about .2 seconds.

Friday Flashback: Star

While looking through posts from a couple of years ago to find something to use for Flashback Friday, I realized that at about this time two years ago, I was visiting my parents (plural, as they were still married) at their house (which has been sold) and hanging out with my beloved Star (who has since died). It was a bit of a jolt.

The first two facts, even shortly after they happened, didn't take all that long to get my mind around, perhaps because I'd been expecting them.  But the loss of Star continues to be devastating: I can't even think about him without starting to cry, which is embarrassingly dramatic.  I didn't write much of an obituary for him when he died because my whole family (even my cat-hating dad) was completely in shock.  Star was such a smart, empathetic, and sweet cat, and he died much too young.

Sorry this post is a bit of a downer.  Hopefully we'll be back to our regularly scheduled Mellybelly absurdity next week.

Thursday in the Garden

I don't think I've gotten to do one of these garden posts yet, so this is rather exciting.  It should be noted that this is not a post about my garden; my only plants are some dead succulents and a couple stalks of bamboo. Rather, the pictures below are from the Japanese Tea Garden and the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park.  Flowers are my favorite subjects for my occasional watercolor paintings, so whenever I see flowers that are beautiful or interesting, I take pictures to use as inspiration for possible future paintings.

Catnip Addict

When I'm away and Sarah takes care of the cats (this is usually only a couple of times a year, but the cats know her by now), she puts a bunch of dried catnip leaves on Scarlett's favorite napping blanket.  Scarlett, who can't get enough of the 'nip, loves sleeping amidst the leaves in a semi-drunken haze.  She looks peevish in these photos because they were taken when I was back from my trip and the catnip no longer had any potency.

"I'm not an addict. I just really, really love catnip."

"They do call it catnip, after all.  That means it's ok."

I'm back!

I was out of town last week, hanging out with family (mine and Geoff's) and taking in as many of the San Francisco sites as humanly possible.

Before I left, I taped the container of cat treats securely to the kitchen table so Melly couldn't steal it again.  The second day I was gone, I received the following text from Sarah, who was looking after the kitties: Teeheehee, Melly figured out how to get the lid off the treat container! She is sooo silly. Treats now in fridge. :) Unless she can open the fridge too...

Honestly, I wouldn't put it past her.

I have another trip planned a little later in the summer and July is shaping up to be a very busy month, so my posting and visiting will probably be a bit sporadic for a while until things wind down.

Flashback Friday: Oh, Melly

I didn't have a new picture to share for today, so I checked the archives from July 2010 to see if there were any fun flashback photos.  I had forgotten about this one, but I love that it perfectly captures Scarlett and Melly's relationship!

Melly's Cave

Here is Melly in her cave again.  That little chin just kills me! I can't believe she didn't move when I scooched in to take the picture.

Scarlett and the New Toys

I ordered some pet supplies recently and the web site was running a promotion in which they sent a free toy with each item ordered.  The toys turned out to be little flowers with crinkly petals and long green stems; you can see three of them below.

I spritzed the flowers with a bit of catnip spray when they arrived and put them on the shelf with the rest of the cat toys.  Scarlett immediately made a beeline for them and gleefully rummaged through all the toys, rolling, bunny kicking, and gnawing.  At one point, she was flat on her back with one of the flowers on her belly, but naturally, she righted herself as soon as I got out the camera.

These pictures all turned out a little blurry, but I thought they made a funny series anyway. Melly is so ridiculous!

Beautiful Scarlett

I don't think Scarlett knows how pretty she is, but I think she has the most amazing eyes.  And ear tufts.  And stripes...

Melly's Hidey Hole

I couldn't find a spot for one of the cats' carriers in the new living room arrangement so I just stuck it next to the couch, reasoning that I could move it easily if company came over.

As you may remember, Melly liked to curl up at the bottom of the tree when she wanted to get away from Scarlett and the pesky humans--I called it her cave. She isn't very happy with the cave now that the tree has relocated, but the carrier is in about the same spot that the cat tree used to be and has become Melly's new cave.

Scarlett on the Sweaters

I washed several of my sweaters and laid them out to dry on the ironing board. Of course, damp black sweaters are cat magnets, so I covered them with towels. This did not lessen their magnetic effect.

I love Scarlett's delicate white paws.  She can be so prim and ladylike sometimes.

Happy Independence Day!

To all in the USA, a very happy Independence Day!

My cats are not particularly bothered by fireworks, which is good since my neighbors have been shooting them off since the weekend. (We live in an urban area so it's super safe. Not.)

Have a wonderful time with your friends and families today, and please stay safe!

A Dramatic Event

On Sunday afternoon, we here at chez Natalie had quite an adventure.

I was in the kitchen with the dishwasher crashing and banging when I thought I heard a cat howling--not one of mine. I went into the living room and discovered Scarlett going at it through open window with a huge tabby. I don't think I've posted about him before, but he used to come around occasionally and Scarlett vehemently disliked him.

Anyway, the tabby was throwing himself at one side of the window, and Scarlett was throwing herself at the other. All her fur was standing on end and she was screaming and hissing and spitting; I've never seen her so upset. Even Melly, who isn't usually fazed much by the neighbor cats, had her tail poofed.

I had recently been warned about the dangers of displaced aggression, so I knew I had to move quickly to separate Scarlett from the tabby. Scarlett was in full Tasmanian Devil mode so it took me several minutes to get around her to close the window, and I emerged very much scathed from that experience. Even after the window was closed and the blinds shut, the tabby continued to howl at Scarlett and she at him. I knew I had to get rid of him.

I grabbed the Squirt Bottle O' Discipline and ran barefoot outside, chasing after the tabby and squirting wildly in his direction.  (To complete this delightful mental image, I will add that I'd spent the day cleaning and was wearing a faded old tie-dye t-shirt and a holey pair of gym shorts, hair in a bird's nest atop my head.)

I went back inside, where Scarlett was still pacing around, clearly still on edge. Melly, usually not one to understand the concept of personal space, was keeping her distance. I got out the laser pointer (Scarlett's favorite), Da Bird, and the treat bin and attempted to distract Scarlett with all three. Just when Scarlett was succumbing to the charm of the laser pointer, the tabby came back to the window. I once again dashed outside in all my finery to chase him away, and I haven't seen him since. I am hopeful that the sight of the wild-eyed, wild-haired lady bearing down on him with a squirt bottle was terrifying enough that he won't be back.

It was late in the evening before Scarlett was back to her usual self. Unfortunately, I think the days of opening the windows are over.

I don't have any pictures from the events of Sunday as the cats and I were very much in shock the whole evening, so here are a couple photos of Melly being adorable:

Window Gazing

This is how Scarlett and Melly spent most of the weekend:
