The Box Remains

"Um, Mom? I'm still not sure what to do in this box."

"Scarlett, I wonder about you sometimes."

"Clearly, this is what you do in the box."

Note: if Scarlett's eyes look a little irritated and runny, well, they were. We were making chili and the chopping of onions had all of us, human and feline, crying. These photos of Melly were taken later, so that's why her eyes don't look so bad.

In which Melly is naughty

This series of pictures takes place right after yesterday's.

To refresh, Scarlett is sitting on the dresser, minding her own business.

Then, Scarlett makes the grievous error of approaching Melly.

Melly reacts as expected...

...and usurps Scarlett's throne.

Le sigh.

In other news, check out these GIFs Connie made using yesterday's photos. Aren't they cool?

In which Scarlett is adorable

I took these pictures of Scarlett because her little white paws were just way too cute not to photograph.

In Which Melly has Attitude

"Don't you have, like, eleventy billion pictures of me on this window sill?
Buzz off and let me look at the wildlife in peace."

Melly the Mighty

"I am Melly the Mighty Hunter.

Well, not so much hunter as watcher since there's glass between me and my prey.

But still. I am Mighty."

Socks on my Cat

Have you heard of Well, here we have socks on Melly, courtesy of Geoff:

"If I ignore them, maybe they'll go away."

"Ha! I have escaped!"

"I'll just sit over here where I can keep an eye on those darn socks.
They can't get me if I'm watching them!"

In related news, I am still unable to comment on most blogs, so when I get my blogging act together and go a-visiting, about 95% of my comments just disappear into the ether. It's bizarre and annoying. I am trying to comment on your blogs, honest! But I continue to be foiled.

Scarlett and the Box

"So... I understand boxes are supposed to be fun."

"I don't get it."

In the background of these pictures, you can see the green sock that Scarlett "kills" and brings to me most mornings when I'm getting ready for work. She is a nut.

In Which Melly is Hungry

Melly wakes me up every morning between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. by biting and pulling on my hair. It's delightful. She won't stop until I get up and feed her. So, I recently got a food dish with a timer in hopes of stopping these nightly wake-ups. I haven't tried the timer feature yet and am currently letting Melly get used to eating her dry food out of the bowl, but I plan to try the timer soon. Fingers crossed that it works!

"Yeah, you heard me. I'm HUNGRY."

Melly's New Box

After I unpacked the latest shipment of cat food, Melly claimed one of the boxes. In her defense, it is the perfect size.

I have a feeling that this will be like the Ann Taylor box that stuck around for over a year and was only thrown out because someone hurked a hairball in it.

Scarlett the Snuggler

Scarlett may have lost out on the breakfast snuggles, but she got dinnertime snuggles instead. She seemed OK with it.

Really, this is her happy face.

I know it's hard to tell sometimes.

Melly the Snuggler

The cats have an ongoing war over who gets to sit in my lap in the morning while I eat breakfast. My lap is a very desirable spot that time of day for the following reasons:
  • I sit for about 10 minutes and can eat breakfast with one hand, which means the winning cat receives 10 uninterrupted minutes of petting and attention
  • I wear many layers of comfy fabrics, which results in extra coziness in the snuggle zone
Here is Melly on a recent morning when she beat Scarlett to The Lap.

She looks a bit smug, don't you think?

In Which Melly Stretches the Rules

Thank you so much for the lovely birthday wishes for Melly last week. We celebrated with extra treats and playtime, and I think she rather enjoyed her special day.

Age seems to be giving Melly the confidence to flout the rules a bit, which is a little worrisome. By the time she hits middle age, she'll be brazenly sleeping on the counters and scratching the furniture.

"I'm not on the kitchen table; I'm on an envelope."

"See? Envelope."

"Now 5% of me is on the envelope and the rest is envelope-adjacent.
Totally counts."

Happy Birthday Melly!

Today is Melly's 3rd birthday!  Natalie insisted on dressing Melly in festive party hats.  I, Geoff the fiance, documented the event:

Whee!  Look at me!!!  I'm a happy birthday party kitty!!!

I'm a silly cat, but this hat seems to be made of candy and food [it is] so can I eat it?  [no, you may not]

I've found the festivity exhausting, I'm somewhat more aged now, you see.  Away with you and your silly hats.

In Which Scarlett is Paranoid

"I think I smell Melly. She's nearby, isn't she?"

"She wants the TV stand, doesn't she? She can't have it! It's mine!"

"Oh, she isn't here? Well, okay then."

The Sweet Smell of Freedom

"It's really, really cold sitting here, but the outside world smells so wonderful!"

In Which Scarlett Holds a Grudge

"I have not forgiven you for abandoning me for two weeks.
No, indeed I have not."

"Observe my big sad eyes.
Very big, very sad.
Clearly I am a kitty who is very deserving of treats."

I got back yesterday from a trip back East for Christmas. My mom was unexpectedly hospitalized last week so the trip was several days longer than planned, and by the time I got home, I really missed my kitties. When I got in, Melly stuck to my side like glue while I unpacked, purring and snuggling and being generally adorable. Scarlett, poor dear, was very wary and made herself scarce for several hours. She eventually came out and snuggled, though.

It's so nice to be home with my kitties!

Thank you to everyone who has sent Christmas cards! I love them, and am sorry I didn't manage to get cards out this year. Next year, I'll hopefully be more on top of things.
