Friday Instagram Roundup

Man, I am slacking more than usual on my photo taking. There are only two cat-related Instagram photos from the past week!  I need to step it up.  The good news is that I did actually take some pictures and videos of the cats this week so I'll get those put into blog posts for next week.  Time seems to be getting away from me more and more lately, which results in major blog slacking.  Yeesh.

If she closes her eyes, I can't see that she's breaking the rules by being on the kitchen table.

Friday Instagram Roundup

This is about to get very interesting.

This cat makes the best faces.

"I see you're eating chicken. Where's mine?"

Can't stop photographing my cats. Send help.

I'm watching the Olympics and this little creeper is watching me.

They appear to be colluding. I'm concerned.

This photo should be accompanied by the "Jaws" theme.

For those wondering how to upload your Instagram photos to your blog, here's how I do it. (This is also how I post cell phone pictures.)
  1. To back up my cell photos, I upload them all (including Instagram pictures) to a Dropbox folder.
  2. From Dropbox, I download the pictures onto the PC I use for blogging.
  3. I upload the pictures through Blogger to add them to a post.
All the uploading and downloading is a little cumbersome, but it allows me to keep my cell pictures, Instagram pictures, and camera pictures all in one place.

Melly and the Sheets

Melly, as you know, is very fond of "helping" to change the bed sheets. Because her brand of assistance involves flailing claws, which are hazardous to me and to the sheets, I shut Melly out of the bedroom when I last planned to change the sheets. After I stripped the bed, I plopped the clean sheets on the mattress and turned back to the drawer to dig out the pillow cases. When I turned back around, there was Melly, calmly perched atop the folded clean sheets! Apparently she had crept back into the room when I wasn't looking.

"Nothing to see here..."

Instagram Roundup

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you all have a special day with your loved ones.

I know a lot of you aren't on Instagram, so I thought I'd post some of my recent(ish) pictures here, along with their original captions. Let me know what you think--maybe this could be a weekly thing.

She woke me up for no reason by pulling my hair, and two hours later, just wants to snuggle. I don't get it.

12th kitty celebrates.

I don't think she wants me to get up. I should probably stay in bed, then.

And then there are those decidedly un-cute cat pictures.

Battle Kitchen Table Continues

As you know, Melly and I have for years been engaged in a battle over the kitchen table. Melly thinks she should be allowed to prance and sprawl on it; I think she should keep her grubby litterbox paws off where I eat.

Unsurprisingly, I am not faring well in this battle.

Recently, I was trying to get some work done at the kitchen table and Melly refused to get off.  She kept walking across my papers or laying on top of them, and every time I put her on the floor, she jumped right back up. After removing her for the trillionth time, I had an idea: I put an empty box on the table, reasoning that if Melly couldn't be removed, she could at least be contained.

It worked!

"This is a very cozy box, Mom.
How nice of you to put it exactly where I wanted to be."

"The edge is at perfect chin height."

"And I can keep an eye on things."

"Is that a fly?!"

"Mom! There's a fly!
You should get it. I'm not moving."

"Oh, hi. I'm just sitting above your toilet, keeping an eye on things.
What things? All the things."

An Experiment in Raw Food

Before I got Melly, I knew nothing about feline nutrition. Melly, as it turned out, had a sensitive system, so I started reading up and eventually settled on a grain-free diet of mostly canned food. This has been working well, but I've been doing some more reading and have gotten interested in raw food.

I got a whole chicken recently and spent a good part of the weekend making various chicken-based dishes. I gave the innards to the cats as a test to see whether they were into the raw food concept.

"This is the best thing ever!"

"Nom nom nom."

"I am skeptical, but Melly seemed to like it so I'll give it a go."

The cats really liked the squishy pieces but were much less interested in anything that required gnawing. Unfortunately, both cats liked to remove the food from the bowl and eat it in the middle of the kitchen floor, which isn't particularly sanitary.  I ended up bleaching the floor repeatedly over the course of the weekend. (When I cut everything into tiny bite-size pieces, they were more likely to keep things in the bowl. Lesson learned.)

So, the verdict is that the cats are big fans of raw chicken parts... as long as they're relatively easy to chew. They were pretty gross to prepare so I'm not sure I'll be replacing their regular food with raw on a day-to-day basis. But it's good to know that the cats are receptive--I think chicken livers will be an occasional treat going forward.
