Bath Time for Melly

Sadly I have no photos of these events, but I thought you might enjoy the story...

On Wednesday evening, my sister and I were watching a movie when Melly strolled across our laps. My sister watched her pass and commented, "there's stuff on her butt."

Stuff on her butt. Great.

I hauled Melly into the bathroom, filled the tub part way with water, and proceeded to soak her lower half. She protested so loudly and vehemently that my sister mistook her meows for a child crying outside. Unfortunately, despite my vigorous swooshing, the poo adhered to Melly's fur would not come loose, so while I held Melly still and half-submerged, my sister stepped in to help. She grabbed some paper towels and attempted to dislodge the poo but this proved fruitless and we eventually had to sacrifice a washcloth in the pursuit of a clean cat derriere. By this time, Scarlett had also joined us in the bathroom and was watching the proceedings with interest.

After ascertaining that Melly's posterior region was thoroughly clean, we released her from the tub and toweled her off, although not before dissolving into giggles at the sight of her. Melly's front half was as fluffy as usual, but her entire back half was reduced to about half its usual volume--and her usually-proud plume of a tail was a scrawny rope.

When we finally dried Melly off and let her leave the bathroom, which she did in a huff, my sister wondered aloud why it is that we always end up washing cats together.

Friday Instagram Roundup

Do cats usually have corners.

Pretty kitty.

Melly and my sister, reunited at last.

Can't possibly get up and go to work--I've been pinned.

Scarlett Mugs for the Camera

Usually Melly is the one to strike different poses for the camera, but occasionally Scarlett likes to be a more active model.  This time, she actually changed poses every time the camera clicked! Silly girl.

Melly Waits

My sister is coming today to visit for a few days, so yesterday, I made the couch up into a bed. As you know, Melly loves my sister, so she is very kindly keeping the bed warm for her.

"She's not getting here until tomorrow?"

"I can't wait!"

"I'll just stay right here 'til she arrives."

Melly Keeps Watch

"It's very important for a sovereign to keep a close watch on her realm."

"I am a benevolent ruler. Mostly."

"I must monitor my subjects, human..."

"...and squirrel."

Scarlett gets some love

After I took the pictures with Melly for yesterday's post, Scarlett decided it was her turn for snuggles. She is such a little lovebug.

What we are doing right now

Here is what Melly and I are doing right now (at 7:04 p.m. Sunday when I'm writing this):

"A little to the left..."

Sweet Scarlett

"Oh, do you want me to look at the camera?"

"What if I look down and show you my head markings instead?"

"No, I like looking this way."

Well, this is unusual

Observe the closeness! The lack of tail swishes!

Friday Instagram Roundup

I'm surrounded by sleeping cats. Time for me to join them.

I love the paw over the nose.

Even cuter. Love this fuzzball.

Someone is dozing right in the middle of the kitchen table. Sigh.

Woke up, turned my head to the left, and was met with this sight.

Speaking of the bookshelf...

Here is Melly, enjoying her spot and steadfastly refusing to acknowledge the camera.

In Which Scarlett is Adventurous

On top of the tall bookshelf in the living room is a small box lined with a catnip quilt, and it is Melly's Spot. I think that's partially because to reach the box, a cat must make a fairly athletic jump from the window sill, and Scarlett prefers to save her energy for things like napping, dozing, and snoozing. On very rare occasions,  though, Scarlett saves up her energy and makes the leap to the top of the shelf. I managed to get a few shots of the most recent occasion:
